I am 72yo and have been sewing etc since very young (by hand). About 10 yrs ago I saw a picture of a quilted flag and thought about trying it; made it and it looked good. My DH was very ill w/ MS and I had time to do alot of crafts. Anyway, today I am in love w/ quilting. I have done redwork lap quilts and hand quilted them (because I LOVE hand work). I am not good at this but I hope w/ practice I will improve. I really do not know the correct procedure in hand quilting and would love to see a tut on this. Does anyone know of one? Best of all I found this community which has given me ambition, knowledge, friendship I could go on and on. Wish more than Thank You to all here.

I quit quilting for about 8 years because I couldn't do hand sewing of any kind because of problems with my neck. I came back a few years ago but do everything with my machine. Even that I have to do a little at a time. I can't be on the computer very long either.
I just found someone to finish hand quilting a quilt I started in the late 1980's. :(

I too am working on Grandmother's Garden with english paper piecing and love sewing by hand while watching tv or waiting during appointments.

It's relaxing and doesn't make me feel like my time gets wasted.

Also, of course, love to machine piece and quilt.

I'm like you, I have to have something to do with my hands while I'm sitting and watching tv, waiting for something or just doing nothing. I've always done some type of hand work and now quilting seems to be the best choice. Besides that ....its just plain fun!!

I bought a box full of stuff at an auction one time and in the bottom was a sack full of Grandmother's Fan blocks. Most were finished, hand pieced, but some still needed to be put together. I finished these by hand piecing. I even hand stitched the blocks together and put the border on by hand. I also hand quilted it. It made a really pretty quilt.

I do hand piecing because that's what I was taught and if you have to take something apart it's so much easier. I've only been quilting for a couple of years and have hand pieced 14 quilts

I started with hand quilting and I still love it. I find it relaxing and enjoyable. Also, I feel more in control of my project when I work with my hands. I can use a machine but, I still find the machine a little intimidating and it can a pain in the neck when someting goes wrong with it.
