Thanks for your thoughts. My Bernina is the 801, just a utility machine with few extra stitches. It still works perfectly, so I am keeping it to use, while my new machine is busy doing embroidery and in case I have mechanical problems sometimes. I looked at buying a Bernina, but in Australia the only one with the wide harp for quilting is $A12,000. A quilting machine with an 8 inch harp seems pointless.

Thanks Joanne,
The distributor I referred to is a dealer who runs classes and has good follow up service, sorry for the confusion. I am only looking at purchasing from a dealer that offers unlimited classes and has quilting groups etc. In comparing the IDT to a walking foot, the Viking walking foot package includes two feet, one for straight sewing and one that does all the wide stitches. Which makes it even harder to decide between the two machines.

Thanks for your comments. Regarding the Bernina, the only model with the wide quilting harp is the 830 which costs $A12,000, way out of my budget. I'm looking to spend $4,000 max to start with. Over the years I will probably buy software and extras as I learn how to fully appreciate the machine. As I am 56 this machine is probably going to last me the rest of my sewing life, thats why its so important I get the right machine!

Hi Navywife,
Your comment intrigued me. Pfaff has Creative 2.0, 4.0 & the top of the range Creative Vision, all combination machines with the wide harp, ranging from $A3000 to $10,000. The Bernina 830 is the only combo machine with a wide harp that Bernina does. So could you please explain your comment, I would to save some money on my purchase!

If it is at all possible, maybe you would want to consider keeping your old machine as a backup for your new one, whichever it is. I would not part with any of my older machines no matter what I buy next. You never get the true value for it and it is great to have a backup if yours is in for servicing and you have to get something done.

I sent my Viking out for service took four months to get it back waiting for parts to arrive. Thankfully I have a back-up.

I have an older Pfaff, which I absolutely love. It's a workhorse and is a quality machine and I will keep it and use it every day until I die. I bought another Pfaff a couple of years ago, with the embroidery unit, and the difference between the two machines is astounding. The new one is junk. Buy a Bernina.

In the process of researching Husqvarna & Pfaff machines, I read that some of you are very put off these brands, because they are now manufactured in China. I am in Australia and have spoken to several retailers about the change of manufacturing site. There have been no problems with availability of parts or service and everything has been business as usual. One assistant at a large distributor told me that the owner (a qualified sewing machine mechanic) actually totally took apart a new machine, just to check on the quality of build. He was extremely impressed and feels there is no need for concern. So I am looking to buy either the Husqvarna Designer Topaz 30 or the Pfaff Creative 2.0. Having test driven both, I am having difficulty deciding. The Topaz has the bigger hoop, the Sewing Advisor, Sensor system and attachable walking foot. The Pfaff has the IDT (built in dual feed) and similar features and stitches to the Topaz?? The prices are within $A200 as the Husqvarna is on special at the moment. I would really appreciate any feedback that might help me decide!
I have all Husqvarna Vikings. I have a Topaz, which I love. I also have the Diamond which is beyond amazing. I love the large hoops, all the fancy stitches, and the USB. I don't know anything about any of the other manufacturers, but I know that a few weeks ago I had a problem with the Diamond and took it to my dealer. It was under warranty, they replaced the entire circuit board or whatever it is called and I got the machine back within 2 weeks; no problelms. I think the Topaz is a good value. My 9 year old DGD calls it her machine, she loves sewing with it and can even embroider without help on it. I think if you check out other machines you will find they are also foreign made; what isn't?
