I would do semi permanet displays for favorite quilts etc on all the blank area. I'd get or make a folding screen for a design wall. Maybe even figure out a way to use sliding closet doors as a divider and cover those with cork and flannel to make a design wall. Figure out something that will work for you.

I am a newbie but how about using pink 2 inch insulating styrofoam (most likely spelled wrong ;)) board, sized to be completely covered by your quilt and pin the quilt on it and then hang on sloping ceiling? Yes, I forgot to mention that a system to mount on the ceiling would be necessary-maybe screw foam board to ceiling first and then pin quilt over it and hide the screws? One idea.

OMG what a wonderful room!! How lucky your are. As far as bending stooping, my friend uses a pingpong table set up in her basment, with bed rises under the legs to make it the right height. This seems to work well for laying out a quilt. If she needs it bigger there her husband helps add either ply wood to extend the table or maybe heavy duty cardboar like from appliance boxes to extend the work space, depending on how much larger and how long she will need it up. Congrats again on a great space!!

I wouldn't want to cover that window. Hmm. In order to have wall space, I'd create a wall out of thin air. A medium height standing bookcase. A room divider as a design wall. I wouldn't go overboard though. Love that room's openness.

How about a pulley system with a shower rod/dowel rod between the pulleys for display of a quilt. The lower ends can then be tacked to the wall.

WOW!! You are SOOOOO lucky!! To even have a "kitchen" in your area!!! And I thought I was lucky to just recently have gotten the Loft area of our townhome for my studio!!!!

As for a design "wall" why not try the idea I am going to do...
Take a large (old fashioned) window shade and replace vinyl with flannel or cover vinyl with flannel....That way you can put up high, like above one of those side windows, and just pull it down when you need to use it, and then "snap" it back up when not in use! I saw idea on internet but they wanted Boo-coo bucks for it!! Going to try making my own!
