I desided to post how I did this quilt because so many of you have asked. Here's an explaination of how I made this quilt.
I used 2 blocks on the front, one is a normal 9 patch (3across & 3 down) the second bock I redraw the block to give it sort of a star effect. I call it a 9 patch alternate block.
The first picture shows what the alternate block looks like and a material list. The second is the pattern for that block in a 12" size you can reduce or enlarge as you like, all my blocks were 12". The 3rd one shows my original plan for the front.
The back was done with big squares, the ones with a normal 9 patch(3 across & 3 down) I used either the rose or the blueish flower gowns because I had 3 of each of those gowns and I wanted to get some sort of pattern that would work.
On the blocks that had the star like pattern, what ever fabric I used in the center of the front block is what I use as the back. This way I was able to have all the gowns used in the quilt.
I used the Quilt-as-You-Go were I made the front blocks, cut backing and batting about 1 /12 inches larger then the front and machine quilted each block together.
Then I squared up the back blocks to allow for the 1inch sashing plus 1/2 inch seams (I normally do 1/4 inch but wanted more support because this is older fabric).
I sewed the backs of the squares together, which left the fronts open with about 3/4 inch opening.
I made 1 inch saching with the binding tool. then sewed the sahings between the blocks on first. Once I had 2 rows done this way, I joined 2 long rows just like I did the blocks. Then added the long saching strips to them. I worked this way, one row at a time until all the rows were together.
Then I made the outside binding again using a binding tool and attached to the front, rolled it to the back and hand sewed it on the back.
I think this is clear enough, I hope so I haven't talked this much at one time in a long while.

How absolutely sweet! I would have never thought of doing what you have made. And the simplicity of your layout is wonderful. Great job. Your friend is very blessed to have you for her friend.
