I think I probably have most of you beat. I took my first quilting class in 1979. The little sampler we made never got totally finished. That's 31 years ago. It's not that I gave up quilting. Oh, no! It is my passion today, and I've finished many things. HOWEVER, at the same time, I have MANY UFOs hanging around, too. Just love all parts of the quilting process from dreaming about one, to hoarding fabric, to starting one, and yes, to actually finishing one once in a while.

I had a UFO that was at least ten years old; but I wasn't interested in finishing it, because I used so many fabrics that weren't cottons. So I finally cut it up to use for quilt bags. I was surprised when a local show hung up my bag as well as the quilt I submitted.

Ok, let's see. Back in 1981 I went to Bible camp and we each learned to make one square. Mine was a random scrappy blue and yellow thing but I was unbelievably proud of it. In 1987 I was pregnant with my first child so I dug out that quilt square and started hand sewing odd bits and pieces to it. Over the several years and 2 more pregnancies I added bits of cloth from my children's clothing and blankets. Some where around 1995 it got packed away. It is truly hideous but I can't bring myself to part with it. I'm thinking about cutting this monster into 12" squares, calling it a crazy quilt and piecing it into a picnic blanket.
I also have 2 quilt tops that my grandmother started in the 30's and a bunch of squares of other peoples UFO's that I've bought at yard sales. Some of them are close to 80 years old if I'm dating the fabrics right.

I have a Storm at Sea that I started in 1988. I put it away while I had 2 small children around my ankles. When I received news that my father, who was in failing health, had been admitted to the hospital, I clamly gathered up the items my family might need for a protraced stay. I threw in the Storm at Sea top to work on while I was at the hospital. This was a "trace around the template, cut out & sew by hand" project.I spent 3 1/2 months at the V.A. hospital, tending to Dad & working on the quilt. I was so proud that I could handle the inmpending loss of my father & still make progress on a UFO. It wasn't until my Dad died & I went home that I realized I had traced all the pieces in RED INK. It's still a UFO, & I don't know how to proceed. That was 1991, and my experience in humility is still fresh. star619 (I'm sure my Dad is laughing at this! :) ).
