Don't know if it is true or not but I was told that the flame retardent (can't spell worth a hoot) doesn't last and washes out.

The walmart by me has that $5 fabric but it is all knits. They aren't that pretty.

Flame retardants are carcinogenic and can seep from fabric through the skin when a child sweats, and can stay in the blood stream for years, accumulating and causing all kinds of health havoc down the road. The real dirty truth is that flame retardants don't save anyone, most perish from toxic smoke before flames reach them.

Flame retardants are suspected in SIDS.

When you buy material that says it is flame retardent it is only flame retardant until you wash it. I learned this when I worked for fabric company. Hope this is useful information

Thanks for the information. I have customers who ask for flame retardant fabric and now I can educate them.

I have been told by a district supervisor for Walmart that each store is scheduled for remodel every 7 years. The major focus of this will be to eliminate any department that requires a hands human employee. That means the elimination of the fabric, ribbons, trims and in almost all of the stores, the yarn department. They don't care one bit about the customer, just the bottom line. Is it any wonder that the Walton's are always on the "world's richest" list?

The very first quilting class I took had a portion on fabric selection. The teacher said that most fabric manufacturers make the same design in three levels of quality. The highest level is sold in quilt shops, the medium quality goes to Joannes, and the lowest quality goes to Walmart and discount stores. As most of Joannes fabrics now are from China you really have to be careful. I compared some Snuggle flannel purchased several years ago with a recent purchase and the difference was heartbreaking. The one from China was several inches narrower and shrunk many more inches. After washing it was also thinner.

As there are no Hobby Lobbys west of Denver I would always take an extra suitcase on vacation for a major shop there. Two years ago they underwent a major cost cutting change in the fabric department and now I rarely find one or two fabrics to buy.

The best place to find quality fabrics now is in my stash!!

Phooey...our Walmarts do not even have fabric!
