For those of you who cut the fingers out of gloves etc., try putting the pull tab from a milk carton, cut to size, in the end of the finger. Glue it in with crazy glue or the like, and it makes a perfect thimble. I have also done this with a "rubber finger".

I like the leather ones, they work best for me since I use the side of my finger when binding so I need a longer thimble.

i've sewn for over 40 years and never could use a thimble. since learning to quilt, i have found i can use the leather thimble but i use it on my ring finger. don't know if that is the usual way but it's the only way i can wear it.

I sewar by Thimble Pad, it works and after a short while you don't even feel it. You can also re use the same pad over and over.

There is a tailor's thimble that has no top.
The very tip of your finger and your fingernail pop out the top and the thimble fits snugly on your finger.
When you use the thimble, you push from the side.
It took time to get used to it, but I've used one for years.

I have very knobby knuckles and there isn't a thimble in the world that will fit. I use the one called Ultra Thimble. It sticks to your finger with double-sided tape dot, provided. Works great and no sore knuckles!!!

It will fit your finger and not feel awkward. Use an inexpensive one to try it.
Good thought, but tap, tap, tap. If you whack it, you may bend it too much.

I'm going to try this one. I'm in the same boat -- just can't use a thimble. And I've tried a lot of different kinds. Thanks for this tip.

There is a new thimble that you put in hot water and then put it on your finger and it molds to you. May be worth a try . I use a metal one with an open end for your fingernail and it's the only one I like.
