DeeBooper, Sounds like such a fun thing to do with your mother. That would be my dream.

My suggestion: As you find bits of time here and there, start cutting up your scraps into 3" squares. The pattern has you using fat quarters. I wanted to use a lot of scraps. Then separate your squares into only 3 categories -
Light, medium, and dark. If you have a particular fabric that you can't classify as a light, medium, or dark (if it is obviously light and dark,) it probably wouldn't have the same impact that you are looking for in the finished quilt.
