I agree with Jan, VA and Billy "If you have to ask you can't afford me"
This guy needs to find out what quilts are really worth and cost to have made by LQS and he'll think you're a bargin. When he comes crawling back I just may find I'm too busy to make a quilt for someone so unappraciative. If we don't value our work enough to charge a realistic price no one else will value us either.

I had a lady ask me about making a quilt for her and I laughed and told her she couldn't afford it. When I explained to her the cost of fabric etc she agreed with me. Told her she was better off watching the sales for the ones you get at Penneys from time to time . I just can't make one for 69 dollars not even a lap size lol

I find this ALL the time...they want perfection and quality until it comes to paying for it. For some family, I give them a break because I love doing it but, for others I'm sorry but its my price or the highway...wonder how they would like being under paid for what they do?

His hobby has value to him. He wants his friends to be impressed by his generosity, he just doesn't want to pay for the priviledge! WALK AWAY QUIETLY. As grandma always said, "Never try to teach a pig to sing, all you do is waste your time and annoy the pig!" :thumbup:

To Jan in VA...wow, that's impressive. And don't forget to add in tax...we pay 9% in this county. Plus we've had the initial cost of scissors, rulers, and all sorts of other tools PLUS the sewing machine which can run into many thousands of dollars. I'd hate to add up what I've spent in books, magazines, classes, CDs, etc. to develop my skills. No one wants to think about that when they want a bargain.

Yes it is true, non-quilters just have no clue what is involved in making a quilt. It doesn't help that mass produced products are available for the price of a comforter.
If your "customer" doesn't want to pay for quality, refer him to your local Walmart and walk away.
What you create is valuable.

Hold to your guns! Don't give your work away. Especially to someone who isn't even family. I would rather use my time and give it away then to sell it for cost of materials and doesn't even want to pay for the cost of materials. I think your price is really low when you look at what quilts sell for on the internet. You don't just include cost of materials and your time, how about the cost of your machine, etc. that you are using to make the quilt.

girl..do yourself a favor and tell him in the best interest of both of you..it aint going to happen..the size..and hand quilting to boot..nearly a thousand dollars...put it all down on paper..and dont chintz on your time and cost..i know he probably doesn't realize all whats involved but us women know how much guns and ammo and outdoor gear cost..so there...good luck
