http://quiltinggallery.com/2009/04/2...ters-acronyms/

Another quilter was kind enough to post this link for me as I am new to site and the acronyms made my head swim. Hope this helps everyone.

Thanks for posting the acronyms. That is certainly helpful while reading the forums.

It stands for featherweight. They are the older machines, Singer, I think. Just straight stitch.
OH, I think I have one. It is a White/ goes back and forth. My husband bought it for me used(underlined) on our first wedding annversary 49 years ago. Does that make it a featherweight. Because it sure is heavy to me!!!!! I don't mean to sound flip, I am just wondering if an FW is just a Singer or any machine that goes back and forth and is an older machine.

Edie
Not a featherweight. They only straight stitch. Look at my Avatar with the pug, that is a black featherweight missing motor. They came in a white, sometimes greenish, black, and tan. Any other color is a repaint job. They are the best machines for piecing you can find, but arm ht,lgth is a little small for quilting. :-D

Not a featherweight. Only Singer made them from 1933 till mid 1960's. They weigh 11lbs out of the box and have a fold down bed, in the box they weigh about 14lbs, thus the name featherweight. They only straight stitch. Look at my Avatar with the pug, that is a black featherweight missing motor. They came in a white, sometimes greenish, black, and tan. Any other color is a repaint job. I have a couple of FWs, and I spent a total of $40 for them. Found the first cute little machine at a yard sale, paid $35 for it. I was collecting used machines for my TDDs (Triplet dear daughters) who were just starting to sew, and was just happy to get even a little machine that only did a straight stitch. Later that year, I bought some "opportunity" tickets that a guild was selling for a fundraiser - 6 tickets for $5, and won it!! They had repainted and decal-ed it, isn't she adorable?? I did not realize the treasures I had collected. I probably won't have that kind of luck finding the third one. :)

I also have a son that arrived in Afghanistan just this week to begin his year-long tour. Quilting is coping. :D
