I made several. One to coordinate with the baby's room, one gender specific (waited til the baby was born to start that one), and a few just because I liked them and the color combinations. Baby quilts can be used on the floor, in the car... just about anywhere. I have found that mother's are so pleased to get a hand made baby quilt that they really don't care what the colors are. My all time favorite was a log cabin, predominately white with pastels. They are now all put away for my great grandchildren's use in about 20 years...lol!

I know this has been suggested before, but I would do a disappearing 9 patch. I just made one for a baby girl and I'll be danged if I can find the pictures! It was made with 4" strips. I made one for each of my kids last Christmas with 6 1/2" strips. Honestly, they look awful. I used a pink, pale green, and a gold. It's so pretty. I think the size of the strips look perfect for a baby quilt. And it's a super easy pattern to do, which just makes things better. If I can find the picture, I'll post it.

Another suggestion, and I've taken my own advice....when I was looking for not complicated baby quilt patterns, I used the search button at the top of the page and searched "easy baby quilt". Came up with a whole ton of stuff that had me researching forever. I even made a few after I bookmarked the threads.

A flannel quilt in the disappearing nine patch is great have made
three baby quilts, I also didn't make it too babyish, so it can grow
with them. But one thing I did was stripes and plaids and pok-a-dots and then quilted in with pearl thread about a 1/2" from
the seam, and made it a large running stitch, it really turned out
cute, I did one in brown,green,blue, cream. The other was left over
from the first but put in more red and blue. Now this third one
I couldn't find pink that I liked, so I bought a package of receiving
blankets, in pink cut them into my 5" squares and made the disappearing nine patch with them. I then cut the left overs in half
and put strips at the top and bottom to make it more rectangle,
and finished it with a pink check. I still have to quilt that one. My
grand daughter will be born around Jan 17th. I hope I can get mine done in time. Just need to get it sandwich together and get
pink pearl cotton. Congratulations! This is a wonderful time.

simple squares in bright colors. find a fabulous--to you or your daughter--fabric and pull in another four or five or six coordinating pieces, cut 4-1/2" squares and placing the colors randomly but the focus alternating, simply sew together. That was the first baby quilt I made for my best friend the day after she told me she was preggers... her daughter still loves it 16 years later
