I found this link for a ladder stitch. It is the same stitch I learned as a little girl to hem skirts. I think they called it blind stitching. Anyway it is a nice stitch that looks much better than any whip stitch can.

I do this with all my sewing, and stitches do not show. Learned from my dear Mother.

I learned this stitch 50+++ years from a 4H leader. I've used it sew the opening in stuffed aninmals, dolls, pillows then quilt bindings when I started quilting.

I saw this a while back and that's the way I stitch the binding too - it really looks better.
