I often tie. I think some quilts are better tied. I especially like it with flannel.

I have only machine quilted a small quilt and have tied all of mine so far. I tie with yarn in a weight that's right for the quilt. I tied a queen sized one in 1980 that's been washed and dried many times and it's still in great condition. I just finished the 83"X100" one pictured and love the country look of it and its warmth. I used a traditional polyester batting that I found in my closet!

My Country Charms quilt.

My mother use to cover old blankets and tie them and this is what I did on my first quilt. My mother had passed and I really didn't know what I was doing, but wanted to make a quilt for my son. My mother was a sewer and had plenty of fabric scraps, so her quilts were scrap quilts, got used so much none left today.

I just love the old fashioned look of tied off quilts.

I like tied quilts and the look of them. I do not do them often.

I do frequently add ties in combination with quilting just for the look of it.

I did one large shabby queen quilt that was stippled for a wedding and added both antique buttons and ties for the look.

Pictures are from a baby quilt with both quilting and ties. Quilt marks are not washed off yet.

The first and only three quilts I have made I have tied off.
About every 5 or 6 inches I tie, using crochet or embrodiery thread to go with the quilt. I put the needle thru the layers twice and tie it with two knots. I leave a good inch of thread with the four sticking up almost looks like short cat wiskers.

My favorite is the Pretty Punch yarn, but use pearl cotton or emb. floss as well--but ALWAYS secure each knot with fray check. I like fluffy quilts--and the MQ ones are NOT fluffy!
I too was taught that if it is tied, it is a comforter......rather than a quilt, but maybe that was the quilt police who started that rumor?

I don't personally like tied quilts, for me, they are a bit too rustic looking. I prefer clean modern designs in most things though. clothing and housewares included ;)

OMG! Me, too! I did a Mickey Mouse fabric kid quilt and am still unsewing the FMQ! I'll definitely tie this one although I don't particularly enjoy it. BTW, I have an antique quilt that was tied with wool yarn and every tie shrunk up into a little ball! My 15-year old friend thinks its really cute.

:D
