Sorry for your families loss but you will be able to use the shirts and you will find any help you need on this board.

I had a quilt done for my aunt after her husband died. She said this was the best thing she could of had. I had it made chair size so she could snuggle up and watch TV. She said sometimes it was like having a hug from him and able to snuggle up also.l

I made my second quilt from this pattern, all from shirts I collected at Good Will for $1.00 each. Bonnie Hunter' site has many examples of scrappy quilts using recycled materials. Check out the left side of the site. I know someone from this site also posted a picture of their quilt made with this pattern.
