Wonderful quilt and love the shirt idea and to use the tags, they really set it off. Thank you for another great idea, you gals never cease to amaze me :D Of course Adam loves it, there's a line waiting to grab it from him :lol: Turned out beautiful.

Love it!!!! I wish I had someone that had old shirts like those! :( DH just doesnt wear much plaid. I have been collecting some plaid fat quarters tho. So maybe one day.......... :D

That quilt is sooo pretty(tell son I said "Manly" lol). So you cut shirts in strips and sewed them on diagonal to foundation(was it a piece of muslin?) Then is the sashing made out of pieces of shirts too, or other fabrics you added? I dont know what you mean by "braided" border...is that the three pieces of sashing sewn together? Did you then add batting and backing and quilt? Sorry, I am not experienced quilter so trying to figure this out. In any case, I LOVE IT. Were all the shirts 100 per cent cotton or did you use blends?

Glad to share my method, Margie. I had some incredibly ugly fabric, fairly light weight like muslin weight, that I knew I'd NEVER use. So I cut it into 10 1/2" squares. I used all types of shirt fabric. Some were blends, a couple were seersucker, most cotton, or mostly cotton. I cut the seams out, leaving only the back, sleeves, fronts, yolks, etc. Then I cut them into strips according to the size piece I had. Like, with a yolk I had more narrow pieces, with the sleeves, I had oddly shaped, some narrower from the shape of the shirt. Then I just had a big pile of scraps. I sewed using the sew two together, then flip the second one over. (Stitch and flip). Finger press, then place the 3rd piece on top of the second one, sew it, and flip it over. The ends were jagged, so I cut them out with a 10" template to make them uniform.

The braided border was the fishtale method. It was difficult to get it all lined up even when I was evening the sides.

Then I made tiny little 9 patches, sewed on the borders. I put a blue backing on. I did the crows foot to get it all together. I had limited time because I was having hand surgery the next week in October, and I wanted to give it for Christmas.

Well, not sure what "fishtail" method means or the "crowsfoot" although the little stitch I can see along borders looks like birdfoot...so I guess that is the crowsfoot...is that a sewing machine stitch or hand? Obviously, I am a newbee here lol. Anyway, thank you for the info...I just love the quilt and the labels left on make it really neat.
