Helping a new quilter
#1
I have an 11 year old "adopted" granddaughter. I have been teaching her to sew and she is a quick learner. She would like to tackle her first quilt. I was wondering for a first timer what would you all suggest her first quilt be. Nine Patch? Log Cabin? I am looking forward to your input.. :-) :-)

I always recommend rail fence for a first quilt because one only has to worry about matching block seams. Makes it easier than a 9-patch, which requires matching seams within each block. The end result of a rail fence makes it look more difficult than it actually is.

I, myself being a new quilter, started on 9 patch & 4 patch quilts. I also recently moved up to strip quilts (from jelly roll) which are good for practicing long straight seams. I also did a D9 which, once the 9p is mastered, is easy but looks complicated.

I am teaching a new quilter. I happen to have on hand simple quilt top samples when we were discussing getting started. I let her pick out what pattern she wanted to do. She chose rail fence. 4-patch was in the running but lost.
