can you do math?

I taught math for years, and now that I'm retired I'm a math tutor, but only for elementary kids. I still pick up a calculator from time to time, too! But I always told my students that they had a calculator in their heads; my 2nd graders believed me! LOL!

my father could do anything with math. i think he thought in numbers. when we started the "new math" in school, i could not get it. dad would show me a way to solve the problem, but when i did it in school the problem would be marked "wrong" because i didnt do it "the right" way. so now i'm blocked. i can do geometry fairly easy since i do it in my job every day, but normal regular math. no. my mind goes blank.

Only use what I need to quilt, otherwise I don't do math. my 10 yr DGS has given up on asking me for help or to check his homework. He knows more than I do. I know I suffered through it in school, but that has been more years than I care to admit.

i can do any math if it involves $$
i skipped geometry in high school WAY more than i went to class. it was after lunch break, and it was the 70's if you know what i mean... if i had known i was going to grow up & be a quilter.. i would have gone to class.
that being said.. dh's degree is in aeronautical engineering.. (something i can barely spell) yes, i am married to a qualified rocket scientist. so when i have math issues, i say "honey, i love you... do the math "

My Dad was really disappointed when I turned down college to be a mathematical engineer. I told him I still do engineering everyday. I draft my own patterns too. I wish I had more of the artistic side in me, then color play wouldn't be so difficult. Still, not having to spend money for patterns is nice, too!
