For batiks with wax still in them, iron between news-print type paper. The paper will draw the wax out. Then you can set the dye with a dye setting wash.

I would love to participate in an international swap. PM me if you decide to go forward with this.

Me too; I like to pick up fabric abroad. If something seems likely to bleed (and this can include LQS fabrics, especially red) I wash them in cold water and then use Retayne with hot water . After this, I use cold water and a Shout dye absorption sheet. I do not find batiks more likely to shed dye than others; the first wash usually deals with it.

I bought a batik caftan from Africa while on a trip through Oregon. The owner warned me VERY strongly to wash it at least 4 times in the washer on warm with half a bottle of white vinegar each time. It will set the dyes for you, but to be safe I'd not take the chance in a quilt. Maybe just a small wall-hanging. Sara

Wonderful! I received a few pieces only in a envelope from a friend in new Mexico and worked them into scratched quilts, everlasting memories and very interesting. That was 4"x 4" pieces.

When my sister was in Nigeria she brought me back some beautiful cotton. She also brought an embroidered tablecloth that washes like a rag and is very good quality fabric but a little heavier than our quilting cotton. I would like a international swap. Keep us posted!

I have fabric from living in the Philippines, and in Turkey, and I would love to exchange some local(Starr hand dyed cottons) for other fabrics from around the world. keep me posted. Thanks for the great idea.

I would be interested in an international swap also. I have received a few pieces of fabric from Ireland, Italy, and Yemen in the past. The fabric from Yemen is a burka (? spelling) which is dull from a coating. The giver told me if I wash it the fabric will become bright rather than dull-I have not been brave enough yet towash it. Whenever I travel I try to sample local cuisine, purchase a Christmas ornament and find a local fabric store. Thank goodness my hubby, daughters and grandchildren enjoy going to fabric stores!
