I'm going to be a bit different, and if I gave any advice, which I'd only give after asking a lot of questions, but I'd advise taking some time and finding a used machine, made back when they were made of metal inside (going to take some research to determine what those are), then I'd put the extra money away not used to purchase it, and use it for any 'repairs' that would be needed over the years
This would be dependent on your answer to :What do you plan to do with it?

Buy a Juki Q - I think it's the best. I also own a Bernina, but like the Juki best for quilting.

I just bought the Janome MC 6600 and I love it!! Only embroidery is lettering, but I'm not much on that anyway (and my mom has a really nice embroidery machine if I need it...lol) Machine was 1400...use the rest for a nice table and fabric!! :)

You did good! I know many people who have that machine and are happy with it! If I was buying another machine, that would be it!

My Husqvarna,/Viking 630 is one of the reasons for my above opinion. I bought it in the '80's, because I wore out my Singer, the plastic in it mainly. I asked the guy if he had anything that didn't have all the plastic in it, and he sold me the Viking, new. Back then it was $800.
I discovered just yesterday it has a dial for the pressure on the presser footI knew that), and it has a little darning symbol, appropriate for free motion quilting. It also has a button for full or half speed, and when using the tension in the darning setting, it automatically goes to half speed. One less thing to think about while I learn free motion quilting

I agree 100%. For $2000 you can buy a slightly used Bernina that will sew beautiful seams, quilt with beautiflful stitches and embroidery with beautiful stitches. If you have not bought a machine yet, I have a slightly used Bernina Artistic 180 with all the reference manuals you will need. It will be your dream machine the rest of your life. I will sell it for $1,800, which will leave enough money to buy additional pressure feet designed for anything you wish to sew.
