Those small holes are often where the black or dark printed figures were on a red fabric. Those places often oxidize and rot due to the iron mordant used to make dark colored dyes, black or brown.

How wonderful that the red has survived so brilliantly!
the turkey reds did survive well. the holes were not where figures were. oddly, the reds were hardly figured at all. for some reason, some of the reds had holes. maybe the fabric was just poor quality. the whites were still almost perfect. many of the quilts were hardly used at all.
