pits have very strong jaws and when they clamp you are hard pressed to get them open. I would not want to take chance on a child get mulled.

My neighbor had one. And when my daughter was outside NO one could go near her but me. And have know several others that have been great. If not bred to be fighters they are just like any other breed.

They really are sweet dogs. It depends on the owner. If the owner treats the dog bad, then the dog will act bad.

We had a pit/husky for 17 years. She helped teach the grandkids how to walk. But she didn't like cats or squirrels in her yard. Other than that she was VERY docile and the very best we ever had. My parents didn't like it when they heard we got a pit but the first time they were around her - that was it - a love affair to the end. We have had and do have very good dogs even now but well still love our "Missy". All she ever knew was hugs and love. She was never chained or beaten. All she ever wanted was to be loved and everyone did that.

The dogs are vey gentle, it is how the owners train them, if there is a bad dogs it is the owners fault not the dog!!

Animal lover here..however, I do not care what kind of dog you have...never...never ...ever leave a child alone with a dog. My sister has owned PitBulls for years. She gets them when are like 5 weeks old and raises them like babies. They have had 4. My BIL is very cautious about children around them. They got rid of one because she kept circling the toddler niece when she was outside. BIL says, we love our dogs but you can't forget they are animals with instincts we don't understand!

My daughter-in-law's brother has one and he is a big baby. I was afraid of him at first; but once I got to know him I can say he is a very likable dog. Do I trust him 100%....NO; probably never will let my guard down when around him, but I do play with him. His teeth are scary looking because they are so sharp.

Pitbulls have gotten a somewhat deserved bad reputation. But 99% of that was caused by the owners they ended up with.

I wil not go into the pros andcons of a Pitbull but - -

Did you know that the numbr one biter of children under the age of 10 is a cocker spaniel? Just an interesting bit of dog trivia.

FYI: I am a telephone triage RN and when I get a call about a dog bite or someone needing an emergency room follow up for a dog bite 9 times out of 10 the dog is a pitbull or pit mix. I'm just saying..........wouldn't trust a pit.
