Why do the binding by hand?
#161
Here is my take on it. Do what you want! and what you can do good. Now, for what I do. If the quilt is going in a show, I hand stitch. the judges look for that, and sew up those corners. If it is a charity quilt, kids drag around, any ruff care, my sons scout and camping quilt, and DG"s get machine sewn. The one on my bed right now is machine sewn. So, there are no quilt police, do what works for you. Just make it look great and no one will care.

i dont understand why u have to put to the back? When my sister told me its for the quilt police,(a judged quilt in a show has to be done this way), I just laughed. I do mine by hand the finial part. But the first part I do that backwards 2 it makes since to me? She told me ppl get a toe hung in binding, even more reason to put it to the front? It just seems right to me, I want to be able to use the quilts- and a snaged thread is not what I want to happen..
I do tie off about every 10 inches or so, they wont get a toe hung in my quilts the hand sewing will be on the front side..

I sew my binding on entirely by machine, sew it to the back and fold over the front and stitch down with either a
straight stitch or decorative stitch. I figure if it can't be done by machine, then it ain't gonna get done.
I cannot do all that hand work, too much pain from carpal tunnel syndrome.
I don't understand why some quilters think that the final stitching must be done by hand.
