My grandmother taught me to sew on her treadle Singer around 1960 when I was 6. My sister has it, but uses it to hold decorations:( I was recently given a quilt that her mother made for me when she was 101 (I was 3). The ladies in my family live a long time, so I decided I should join the fun. I remember making a moo-moo as one of my first projects. My mother and I made a green and yellow quilt for a G-A project at church when I was about 10 and I hand quilted it. Boy am I proud of that! In high school I took homemaking and made most of my clothes. After college, teaching and children, I picked up counted cross-stitch. I did that for 20 years and last year at the age of 56 a teaching partner said, you have to try quilting with me. "I'll teach you!" How could I resist an offer like that? So, 15 months later, I have made 6 quilts and have had so much fun!!! I am 57 now and my husband just let me buy a used Gammill long arm last weekend! I am so excited! I plan to use it for many years!

I took home ec about 1961-62. For the next several years I made all my clothes and clothes for my sister, mom, and grandmother during the summers when I was home from college. I also made my first quilt, which my grandmother quilted for me, before I went to college. I eventually made my wedding dress and all bridesmaid dresses, but sewed very little afterward as I became an instant mom to a 5-year-old son and we later had two other boys.
I decided to take quilting classes after I retired from teaching and have made several items since that time.
So - I've been sewing about 48-50 years and quilting off and on about 10 years.
