Just dived right in. Kids were all older so I was no longer sewing there clothes and I wanted something different to do. So glad I did. I love the creativity of it all!!

I taught myself how to do basic quilting. Finally convinced an expert quilter to look at what I was doing and evaluate - which she reluctantly did. She must have liked what she saw because she loaned me lots of books and started sharing info with me - invaluable.

Mostly self taught, when I started there were no classes and no one in my family quilted. Made a small baby quilt back in the 60's for a home sewing project in school. In the very early 80's talked my grannie into taking a class with me at the local quilt shop (turned out to be a sampler and all by hand). From there it's been knowledge from books, trial & error (lots of that), other quilters, the quilting board and just the desire to learn all I can.

My mom taught me how to sew on a treadle sewing machine when I was only 5 years old... and I've been sewing ever since. But in 1985 I got hooked on quilts, and now that's the only kind of sewing that interests me. I'm mostly self-taught, but always learning new stuff through books and websites.

My mom's cousin taught me how to sew when I was 10. I learned more about sewing in the sewing section of home ec in high school. Her cousin made a lot of quilts but I didn't start quilting until I was 52. Then I just got a book and took it from there.

About 30 years ago I took a class offered by BOCES adult education. Wonderful, very elderly white haired lady taught it and insisted it all had to be done by hand. When my hands got so bad I couldn't hold a needle anymore I gave it up for many, many years. Finally about 6 years ago I bought a Viking machine and started taking a few classes. It's wonderful to realize that my great-great-grandmother would have done everything by machine if it had been available-LOL.
