How about dots, to continue the lighthearted look? Maybe something like these:

I love the yellow! And if I were sashing it, I would use the green. froggyintexas

Lots of people go for the brightest of colors so don't feel bad about yours. I would choose a print for sashing-maybe a white background with all the brights in it. If it's going to be for a child, what about a circus print? They are also vivid and joyful. Or a bright floral?

Actually, I really like red and yellow together.
I agree with the above. My first thought was make it a red sash OR even use a mixed purple! I like bright colors also. I think these blocks look great.

I like the idea of "antiquing" the finished top, tea dying is a great idea, if you tea dye it and you don't like it washing soda will take the tea away. Sometimes tea can give a dirty look but coffee gives a lovely warm tone in dying...just use the cheapest instant you can find, make a very strong solution and soak in very hot water over night.

I would add floral fabrics to soften. Found these at j joanns.

Blue, yellow and hint of green.

The colors opposite (or complementary) to yellow are purple and the blue. Check out the color wheel and explanation below. I would add some prints, tone on tone etc for some variation. Or, you can always make larger (16 to 18" blocks - simple: Ohio Star) and use what you have made as the centers of these new blocks.
