New to quilting - need advice

I think you might first go to a quilt shop and look at various applique projects ---alternatively buy or get from library a book showing applique techniques. You might want to talk to somebody about the various types. Then you can decide whether you like the zigzag, raw edge, maybe button hole, etc. There are lots of different techniques I was thrilled to get the buttonhole on my Janome, but lot of machines offer various stitches that work. I saw a public television program just yesterday with Nancy Zieman showing various techniques. It was really interesting.

I bought a used Viking Designer (original Designer with D cards) about 8 years ago. My machine is almost 15 years old and runs like a dream. I personally wanted some embroidery (D cards have designs that you slip in and select on touch screen), but I didn't want to pay thousands for that option ... I am first and foremost a quilter.
Things I looked for and got were: needle down position (when you stop to turn etc, needle stays down in fabric. You don't have to lift in the back), free motion quilting with feed dogs that could be lowered, button hole stitch for applique, came with a walking foot, sensor pressure on top of fabric (you can set type of fabric - or use auto) and it senses pressure and adjusts pressure from above to suit the type of fabric, and top loading bobbin.

I'm going to check out the Sewing with Nancy episode - thanks for that!!
I know this sounds very elementary.....if my machine has a button holer is that the same as a button hole stitch or not in this case?
There's a local shop where I'd like to take a class and it sounds like they use the button hole stitch. From reading all the replies to my question, it sounds like I could get away with a zigzag stitch. The shop doesn't sell machines but they directed me to a Janome dealer.
I think making a list of the must have features is a good idea. And I do think I'll start with something used.
