I take my little Janome. I was lugging my Viking D1 but decided I didn't want to take a chance on hurting the computer motherboard in it. So now it stays put...

Whoa, I am extremely arthritic and not very strong, but have no trouble lifting my 301's 16 pounds. That why she has a handle. I use only the handle and put her on the seat of the car if the sewing site is close to the parking. If I have to walk a bit, I have the rolling case from JoAnn's to hold fabric, rulers, etc along with the machine.

It comes down to what you realy want. I want my 301.

Ditto, I have mine in a scrapbooking tote on wheels. Fits perfect.

Hmmm I would go for the Janome if it has all the quilters attachment, little table and cary case. You can do everything on it fo rquilting and it does an awesome job both piecing and quilting.

I also love the Singer 301 but eventhough it is lighter then the black machines it is still a bit heavy. Also it does not do zig zag and I find it harder to quilt on. It is a wonderful machine though. Reading about your surgeries. I would definitely pass on this one for taking along. Eventhough I can move it around in the house I find it too heavy to take to class. I have joint and back issues.

Do you have to decide or can you get both?

I would go for the Janome, but wait, at the cost I would get both and then make the decision as to which I will take to class.

Go with the lighter machine and be kind to your body. I sit here with a v. sore back, with a 5 hour trip ahead of us in a day or two and wonder how I'll manage. I carried heavier than I should have plants the other day. My own fault.
Be kind to your back. Don't put yourself in harm's way. Go with the lighter-weight machine, which is, I hear, a very good model. Sounds like you'll have the best of both worlds with the Janome: quality and comfort.
    Blessings,
    A.

Sorry I can't weigh in on the Singer as I'm unfamiliar with it
