My quilting buddy has that Janome and she loves it but doing quilts, she goes thru one in about a years time. They are light weight but don't hold up real well if you do a lot of quilting. The 301 will last a lifetime or two.

If you must have something that does decorative stitches by all means go with the Janome. But if you only need a straight stitch the 301 would be my my suggestion. Shoulder issues aside, if you have a rollling case to replace the original case the Singer will last forever.

I am needing a lighter weight machine to carry to classes & retreats as I have had 2 shoulder surgeries and my other (3) machines are H-E-A-V-Y and I need a lighter one to cart back & forth.

I vote for the 301. The Gem is a great little machine (I almost bought one a whle ago) but I think it's just a bit light. Yes, the 301 and case are not light BUT here is my solution that won't cost you much at all - for years I used one of those luggage carts we all used before the rolly suitcases. I finallym broke mine and got a new one for about $20 at Kohl's - and I still use it sometimes even though I have several rolling sewing machine cases. Just get a strong bungee cord and you can put a storage bag on topm of the case for all the other things we need to carry. Another inexpensive solution is to purchase one of those rolling insulated cooler cases that fit the size of your machine.

Hope this helps - still looking for a black long-bed 301 (mine is tan).

The 301 is light-weight, and has a handle for carrying! They are GREAT machines--you'll never want anything else once you try one!

Hi.
I would take the Jem over the 301. If you are used to sewing on an electronic machine, the 301 might be too slow and clunky for you. JMNSH, but that was they way for me.
