it is simple..you make a 9 patch block any size and the cut in half top to bottom and in half from side to side...(two cuts) then flip the pieces one turn to the right and sew them back together...that simple....looks neat don't it...

Like you, I'm not a pastel person, either, but I do love batiks! Your blocks look terrific to me and the fabrics and colors are perfect for a summer house! Like others, I look forward to more photos! Congratulations for breaking out of your comfort zone.
