I just made one in fall colors that calls for transparency in the color choices. You want a light, medium, dark and medium print in the same color family. The idea is that where the blocks visually 'overlap', it looks like the top and bottom colors blend.
A white, black, a print with mostly black and a print with mostly white would work nicely!

I have a black and white quilt that was made for me Just square blocks but it had lots of diffrent shades and patterns turned out very pretty

A D9P would look nice. I would personally put in a red block in the center of the 9 patch. That would just set everything off. But that's just me. You'll have to let us see what you finally decide on.

Hi, I made one with black, white and red. However, when I washed it the red ran onto the other colors. Lesson for next time: Wash the red first!

The prettiest black & white quilts I've seen here are D9P. A pop of red puts them over the top fabulous. I haven't done one yet, but I intend to.

you might try using the Shout color Catchers in your wash with your quilts. I've had good luck with them taking in the colors that bleed and keeping the lights light. just FYI
