I wash the quilt with Color Catchers as I do not prewash my fabric, so that if the colors run I can catch them :)

Also all the other stated reasons.

I keep reading that to dry the quilt you lay it out side on a sheet to dry flat. How do you keep the squirrels, birds, etc away? How do others dry them?

I don't wash mine, since they are all too big to do in my washer and I don't know about going to the laundromat, because, I never know what has been in those washers. I don't trust them. I do prewash fabric though

Everyone doesn't. The only quilts I have ever washed after completing them are the ones for Downey Quilts for Kids. They require it for pet dander, smoking, etc... I like the crisp, new feeling, also!

not everyone can put outside to dry. In todays modern world the young women only know washer/dryer and/or dry clean...many do not even own an iron....so if it can't go into a washer delicate cycle and dryer low temp, I don't make it....

Yes, all of these, plus the others. I just like the smell of CLEAN, and sometimes fabrics have a smell of dye and sizing.

I do press them afterwards, but I have not made any really big things in years, mostly crib quilts....
This is REALLY a dumb question: HOW do you press a quilt after it is completed? Once I pressed the binding after it was done and it seems so flat after that.
If you use a 100% cotton batting, it won't melt (or go flat). Poly blends will still melt as do the 100% poly batts.
Thanks, I didn't even think of that. I use traditional poly bat.
