I was lucky enough to find a vintage thread cabinet from Norway in pristine condition. It opens up in layers and hold gooby-gobs of thread. I'm doing the happy dance for my thread!

Plastic shoe boxes - you can see inside and could put the threads in by color - blues and greens, red and orange, etc. the boxes stack nicely and don't take up much room. I also use these for small projects and Fat Quarters.

I found a small cabinet about 3' high and 15" wide that was originally for scrapbooking, the drawer handles have been stenciled with "stickers", "pens", etc, I took labels and covered them up by colors - whites, ecru, creams in one drawer, pinks and reds in another and so on. it sits beside my sewing table and is easy to find what I need.

I also put my spools of thread in snack size plastic bags along with their matching bobbins. I use ponytail cloth elastic holders to fasten around each bobbin to secure the thread. Neat little packages. Now, I don't have a ton of threads, so my supply can stay relatively neat and colors easy to find. The thread packages are stored in a sewing/thread cabinet that I inherited.
This works for me, so far!

mine are stored on the wooden rack, hung up behind my sewing chair..out of the sun. easy to get to,for sure.

the rest is in the stacking drawers i got at Joanns for 50% off.
larger spools, doubles etc. i liked the stacking set so much, i bought the second one..and it fit perfectly on top of the other one.

These were found at Lowes, but I also found a nice one at Atwoods! Just measure your thread spools L and W so you know they will lie flat or even stand(mini cones).
Great for keeping different threads separate! YOu know, cotton, poly, silk, etc...

They do sell one at Joanns, but it is flimsy, the back is wide open because they expect you to mount it to the wall...and it cost more than these hardware ones!
Love your idea and probably is the most cost effective. I purchased a lot of Connecting Threads spools also. Will take one spool to Lowes and check this out!

Mine are on the wall on thread holders but I made a cover of muslin and hang over it. It seems to work.
