First sewing? -shortage of money for kids clothes. Now, it's usually cheaper to buy the grandkids clothes than it is to buy fabric. sad

I had no interest in sewing until I was 17 years old and went with my mom (who did sew) to a fabric store where I saw some material I just fell in love with. I told my mom I wanted to make a dress with it (on Thursday) for a date on Saturday night. My grandmother, who lived with us, said she would show me how and I finished sewing the snaps in the side placket as my date drove in the yard on Saturday. He was so impressed with what I had done that besides taking me to several of his friends homes that evening, he told everyone we met that I had made my dress. That was the beginning - I have been sewing for almost 50 years now and still enjoy it.

I began sewing when I was 7 - that was almost 51 years ago. My grandmother helped me make a torn apron for my mother for Christmas. After that I was going over to her place and she was helping me sew - they are glorious memories! Before she passed she put peoples names on the bottom of things in her apartment and the Morse machine had my name on it. I have loved it forever and used it for many years.

Thank you for jogging that marvelous memory!

I still have my first sewing machine. A toy singer that had a crank and did the chain stitch. I started sewing baby doll clothes when i was about 7 or 8. I will be 65 in Sept.

64 years for me. All my clothes, including coats, until I had children - then their clothes while they were small - then household "stuff", and now I quilt, mostly.

Absolutely -- I agree!! I wish sewing and quilting was my job, Full Time, every day -- although I do teach Family & Cons Science (Home Ec) and one quarter of sewing to 8th graders! I hope I inspire some of them to LOVE sewing and learning to quilt!

My mother sewed all of the dresses for my sister and I when we were growing up, even our special Easter outfits, on Singer treadle. She taught me to sew a few stitches when I was about 7 or 8 yrs old (I'm 62 now). My best friend and I would raid our moms' rag bags and make dresses for clothespin dolls. I began teaching myself to embroider at age 10 when I sewed my mom's initials on a pretty hankie as a gift. About this time, she also taught me to knit. In junior high home ec class I learned to make clothes for myself and continued to sew my own dresses and skirts all through high school (my mom would knit my sweaters). I didn't like clothes off the rack; I wanted to be different. Then I sewed my own wedding dress; then clothes for my first born, a girl. In my 20's, I taught myself crochet and crewel embroidery. I subsequently had 4 boys, so I turned my skills toward more crafty sewing (dolls, toys etc). Made my first quilt when I was expecting my 3rd child, and I have lost track of how many I have made since! So I feel as if I have been sewing all my life. I love it.

It seems that our grandmothers had a great deal to do with the development of our sewing, crocheting, knitting and needlework skills - something for all of us to pass on.
