My daughter asked me to make a baby blanket for her good friend who is having a little girl in a few months. She picked out the shadow box square. I made this today with scrap material to see if I could make it, and think its OK but we are wondering if it would look better to use, say, a dark red and a light red to showcase it better. What do you chose when making this square.

Ummm...was this totally a sample to see what the blocks would look like, or are you going to use some of these fabrics in the quilt. If it is the second, I think that the colours are much too harsh for a baby quilt. Using a light and medium to dark tone of one colour for the windowpanes is nice--just pick out a colour that will complement the window itself.

It is an attic window pattern. Perhaps shadow box is another name for it? Anyway, I think dark red and medium red would look good. I would recommend not using solids but using tone on tones for the reds.

Totally a sample, looking for little teddy bears for the center block as the Mom to be has a bear colection.

This is called Attic Window pattern. Shadow Box is a little different. I would use a dark and a medium shade of one color for the 'windows', something that goes along with the center fabric. Bears will be cute for this pattern!

p.s. use this link and look at the second picture for a sample of shadow box pattern. Hope you don't mind this. Just trying to be helpful.

Good job......Now why didn't I think to do my window corners like that (hst) instead of doing the y-seam? It has to be soooo much easier!

Wow that is pretty, but I don't think it is a shadow box. For a baby, I would use light colors.

Yup, this is definitely Attic Windows block. For inspiration visit the QB quilt gallery attic windows thread. I personally prefer a light and medium of the same shade to do the window sills but a cyber-stroll through the gallery shows people do contrasting colors as well.
