The freezer method that JulieR mentioned works for cross stitch linen so I would think it would work for cotton. Dampen the fabric, place in a plastic bag, and place in the freezer. When you remove it from the freezer, iron.

ironing the fabric while it is still damp with a little spray starch or sizing seems to help a lot

I also use Magic sizing and if necessary you can use a spray bottle with a little vinegar. The smell will dissipate.

Batiks are notorious for bleeding, so it would be best to wash it before using.

I've used Mary Ellen's Best Press with fantastic results. Some of my fabric has been folded for a very longtime and all the wrinkles come out with the Best press. Well worth the costs.

One thing that has really helped me is my mangle. When I iron it while still a little damp and roll it through the mangle it really comes out beautiful.

I hear you. I've had the same problem and have even told the salesperson I did not want the wrinkled part in my yardage. Some oblige, some won't.

1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water, works every time.

When you wash it, don't dry it (what my mother used to call it) bone dry. It's not really wet but not dry either. And spray starch always helps.
