The quilt sounds nice but if you want to make something smaller how about a courier bag or as mentioned in another post a cover for a laptop computer? Does she have an Ipod or cell phone? If so how about cases for them? There are free patterns on the internet for all of those things.

What about a quillow? When not in use it would be a cute pillow for her bed. Just an idea.

I know you've already decided - but if you need an idea for the future you might like this idea... When our oldest daughter wanted to give hand-crafed gifts to her girl friend one year we made them each a 'jewelry' bag for when they traveled. We made it round with a smaller round stiched to the inside. Stich 'spokes' on the smaller round (this makes small pockets for keeping things separated.) Just above the smaller round, sew on a casing for a drawstring. I put button-hole openings on the outside fabric to pull the drawstring through. The girls loved them!

I think I could of used that last year for when my grandaughter graduated. I'll have to keep it in mind for another or just make her another one.LOL
