Actually I don't think I would choose any. They are not my cup of tea. Not the standard Pink Girl.

I think you misunderstood that section.

That first link was to the rules the Hoffman folks use to choose/create the annual Challenge fabric that must be used/included in every submission.
This year it's that purple floral that FF posted in the op.
The 2nd link has the rules for the participants.

Hoffman can't/won't pick a batik because of the "individuality" of each cut/bolt.

You most certainly can use batiks in YOUR submission quilt for the challenge, just like you can use any other fabric - even - GASP - non-Hoffman fabrics.

:D They have traveling exhibitions of each contest.
If you get the opportunity to see it, grab it.
It's an amazing display of every conceivable technique, and the quilts from the gamut from traditional to modern to art.

They've got great pictures up on that site I linked to, but seeing the 50+ quilts together is really something.

I've seen that at large shows and smaller guild shows as well.

Kaufman also had a similar contest. Their website isn't as organized - I can't find what the "challenge" was.
But here are some of the quilts if anyone is interested.

The other contests are listed at the bottom of the left hand side menu.

They are okay...i'd probably pass up the large florals in a store...would probably buy some of the coordinates to use.

I love the fabric this year.
Last year I bought five yards of the Hoffman focal for an OBW and it now languishes..I should sell it.

Typically, the Challenge fabrics and coordinates look way better in the "flesh" than they do on paper, so we're expecting the new ones to be fantastic as usual. The Challenge fabrics and coordinates are normally Hoffman's highest-quality fabrics, printed on the best stocks at their best Japanese mills.

Regarding Hoffman hand-dyes - several of them were chosen as Challenge coordinates in 2010 -- none in '09 or '11. For 2012, they haven't included any hand-dyes either. This isn't unusual, as the hand-dyes are on different base stocks and have totally different finishing. The exception in 2010 was possibly due to the lack of sufficient numbers of coordinates in the line used for the Challenge.

The Hoffman Challenge is always a lot of fun, and we really enjoy looking at pictures of all the fantastic winning entries in every category -- the dolls especially are fascinating to see.
