Both. Sometimes there is a pattern that strikes me, so I get it, go home and search through my stash, then purchase anything I need to complete the quilt. Sometimes I see a fabric I can't live without, then hunt up the perfect pattern for that fabric.

I've done both.....but usually the pattern comes first. Then I try visualizing it in batiks, 30's reproductions, asians, tone-on-tones, scraps, etc until I like what I'm thinking about....then hit my stash, then hit my LQS if I need to.

I usually have the fabric and then look for a pattern to go with it..to best show it...

Me too. I have lots of patterns so when I want to make one I look through my stash for something that will work. If I don't find anything I like, then I will look for a pattern to match my stash.

I think I do both. I'm going to make my mom a winter quilt, and looked for a pattern, I called elegant, then I found material that would fit. Usually though I let someone give me their choice of up to three colors, and buy material to match who they are and yell use me, then find a pattern.
