I bought one at an estate sale that you would love. It has lots of steam and doesn't shut off. Since I want an iron that shuts off it will soon go to the quilt guild as a door prize. It's a Proctor Silex. froggyintexas

The new irons are considered a throw-away appliance, actually what isn't these days.....I have tried cheap, expensive, fancy, plain...they all don't last more than 1-2 yrs. Now, I just go to Walmart, grab the one in the mid price range and off I go. I do use distilled water in the tank though....we have a water softener in the house, but I still do that.

Rowenta is a great iron !!! I have had many and it is the best, by far. USE DISTILLED WATER.

I've read many disappointing comments about the expensive ones, so I just keep buying the less expensive ones. I bought a Shark. Other than shutting off by itself, it's not bad. I like it best of the ones I've had lately. They tend to "fall" at my house, so I'm better off not spending too much anyway.
Same here. Had 2 Rowenta's and both leaked within the first year - tried cheap ones that worked better but don't get hot enough.

Finally decided to try a Shark ($40 at Target). Nice and heavy, does shut off but heats up fast. Have had it for about 6 months now and love it! Has several steam settings with a high steam and large water reserve. When my other one (by my sewing machine dies) I'm going to buy another one. Gee....2 decent irons for less than the price of those expensive ones.

I would never have anything but a Rowenta--for quilting and laundry use.

why use distilled water? I'm seeing this on several posts but don't understand the difference if the iron doesn't specify to use it. Thanks!

I just bought the Reliable V100 digital velocity iron. Oh my goodness, it is wonderful!! I have gone through 2 Rowentas, a Shark and a few cheapies too. This iron is the best, not inexpensive at $179, but finally I have an iron that gets hot and doesn't spit. I was going to buy the Oliso, but there are a few poor reviews on it so I decided on the Reliable.

I am using the GE spray/steam iron I got as a wedding gift. I think Black and Decker has bought them out. BUT they don;t make them like they did 50 years ago. NONE of them....
