I put a big clothespin where I left off, covering the point of the needle so no one gets stuck and then fold it so it shows.

I'm another no-hooper. I do a generous amount of pin-basting, then start with some basic SID around the blocks in order to stabilize the quilt a bit. Then I work toward the more detailed work.
I like to lay the quilt on a table for the first step, then I work on my lap.

You may have to experiment to find the most comfortable way to quilt for YOU. I've quilted in a frame and in a hoop and I find the hoop far more comfortable (and more portable) I know a few people who quilt with the work loose in their lap but the technique is a little different. Try it both ways. The hoop give you more control and you may prefer it to start with.

I use a large hoop, most of the time, that had a frame that I couldn't stand! I push down on the fabric once its in so that it isn't so tight. I've not been able to quilt without one! It's just a preference for most people.
