Am I overly cautious? I didn't get much done today!
No way are you overly cautious. We had a thunderstorm and it blew out our cable DVR box. I had unplugged my sewing machine, thank goodness. I could take the cable box back and get it replaced by the cable company, but I would have had to buy a new machine if it had been zapped.

I think you are doing the right thing. Better to be safe than sorry. Our toys are very expensive to replace, so it is best to avoid trouble when we can. I do the same thing! I had a machine take a power surge about 15 or 20 yrs. ago. I was without my machine till it was repaired and the insurance company paid over $300 to fix it. Would it not have been better to unplug??????? I think so!!!

You're setting your things up to be hit by a power surge. Turning them off doesn't protect them, because they are still plugged in. They need a surge protecter OR they should be UNplugged.

I unplug everything but not the computer, go figure! Do you just unplug it from the wall? Does that mess up anything in the computer?

I have a power surge protector thingy on my machines. I hope that is enough. Has been so far. If it really bad then I will unplug.

Just do an orderly shutdown before you unplug.

I unplug mine and I've heard it's dangerous to talk on a land line phone.
