We had fellows come to the door recently trying to sell us internet connection and tv supposedly via the local phone company. I was walking out the door unaware they were coming up the front. I told them my husband worked for a company that provided us with those services free (which is true) but they kept trying to sell them to me. I finally told them that I was calling the police because if they did not get the concept that I get the services they were trying to sell for free already then they must be trying to figure out how to rob my house. Probably pretty stupid of me to say that directly to these guys, so I did call the police and report them. Not sure if they were casing or just stupid

The bite from a little dog is a lot worse at times than that of a large dog, yet people are more afraid of the size of a large dog.
My large male Collie was a great Guard dog - not just watch dog, he would actually lunge at people if they got too close. Had him on a leash one time walking, had a guy try to come up to me, he got in his guard position with hair on his back UP, growled and the guy kept coming even after I told him to BACK OFF NOW, dog lunged at him, missed getting him by inches! The guy was blown away that a Collie was attacking him like that. Guess he didn't watch Lassie on tv.

And what they did was take a car full of people to a neighborhood, drop them out at various locations and then come back later and pick them up. After going to 2 doors he stopped and waited to be picked up. Years later my niece got duped into a similar job selling office stationary.

So it is possible this person was doing the same thing and just really into the selling of it all. Kirby Vacuum salespeople hap pep rallies before they went out on the road.

But I do not buy anything from telemarketers or door-to-door salespersons, we just never know if they are truly who they claim to be.
We had a lot of that when we lived in FL. They mostly used young kids supposedly trying to get a scholarship or raise money for their school. They would drop them off about 9AM and not pick them up until about 4PM. It's unfortunate they tend to prey on people that don't know any better.

You can never be too careful any more. You did the right thing.

Good for you for being cautious. Fortunately, around here, people have to have a license to solicit/sell house to house, business to business. Our police are very happy to escort them out of the community and out of the county!

I live out in the country with few neighbors and am alone all day. I always keep a pack of dogs and I too don't open the door if I don't know the car or person. Even with protective dogs, there are enough scary stories even around here on the news. And I do keep my doors locked too should an unwanted visitor be silly enough to ignore the "Beware of Dogs" sign and the noise of the dogs barking (and not in a friendly way). I have my dogs trained to be best buds only if I open the door and tell them it's OK.

I quit answering the door & put up no soliciting signs. I know when people are coming over or DH knows, as everyone knows to call before they come over as we may or may not be home (especially in the afternoons !!NAPPY time is quality time at our house !LOL)

I do not answer to the door to anyone that I don't know. How do you know when you answer the door that they might have a gun and shoot you. You don't know.

this is exactly what they are doing...lots of the younger 20's folks here fall for those jobs with high hopes..only to be let down by # of hours they walk the neighborhoods and end up with nothing at the end of the week!

I even had to explain what a resession was ??? He claimed he was the highest sales person in the area?? Oh boy, so when he left, a red SUV drove by going one way, he hollered at it, it turned around and picked him up - 2 people in the truck and it drove off in the opposite direction.
Seems fishy, sure he had a flyer with magazines but still, with people not having jobs guess they will do anything.
I called the police and reported it, just in case.
I work for the Police Dept here in Winston-Salem, NC and we have had a lot of reports about this scam as well. So glad you reported it!

the last place I lived that had a police dept., the police chief used to say, If you are in doubt, CALL US - we would much rather respond and it turns out to be nothing, than to have a crime happen and later someone says, Oh I thought they looked suspicious but I didn't want to bother the police.
