Maybe I should make one,since I just lost another chicken today.
i went out to the coop and the chicken was just dead! No reason at all.

I just did a search and found a site with awesome tutorial. www.instructables.com You'll have to join to be able to see pattern and instructions. Heres the link, hope i can load this right.

Wow,i didn't see where you had to join.Or Google Chicken Pincushion.The pattern is in with the Funky chicken pincushion.

I ran out of sand,so i used those plastic pellets.I'm going to try the crushed walnut shells next.

I like the idea of using sand in them because so many of the other things like rice would just be a mess if they got wet accidentally. You could always buy sand that is meant for a child's sand box at a building supply store or a garden center surely. Sand would be waterproof basically. Just set the pincushion some where warm or in the sunlight and let it dry naturally if it got wet. Just MHO

I found this in PetSmart in the Reptile department as 'sand litter'. Do you think it's the same as the type/texture used for birds? I can't find any 'bird litter'. (It was $12.99 for a bag, I think.)
