Oh my gosh! Yes, I've done this numerous times. And have bought lots of pans to replace burnt ones. But this is not a really bad thing to do.

The worst thing I've done is been washing dishes. And got down to the last skillet. Turned the eye on to melt the grease so I could wipe it out before washing it. Go off and forget about the skillet. The beepers go off. Kitchen is full of smoke and flames hitting the ceiling. Dummy me grabs the pan handle. Make it to one of the bar stools and had to set it down. It was burning my hand. Got the door open and grabbed it again and got it on the iron table out back.
Boy what a mess! Even made a burnt place on my barstool. My ceiling was just blackened a bit. And the cabinets. Thank GOD! I could of burned our house down.
Guess who never leaves the stove when there's a skillet on any more! ME!!!!

I've done the same thing, but found a fix. When I want to boil eggs, I put them in a crockpot on low. Takes about 3 hours for them to get done, but once I left them in there overnight and they were fine - just a "little" overdone. Now when I want to hibernate in my sewing room, the eggs will be fine even if I forget them!

I no longer make hardboiled eggs on the stove. About 5 yrs ago I recieved an egg cooker by cuisinart, I can make up to 7 eggs at one time. It even looks like an egg. I do like it.

I started some hummingbird nectar and walked off and forgot about it. No big damage done but lots of smoke and a huge blob of black stuff in the pan. Luckily it wasn't a glass top stove and it didn't start a fire. Added another smoke alarm at the kitchen doorway and make it a point to stay in the kitchen when I am cooking anything!!!

Oh, what a mess! So sorry. I use a timer, too. One that I can clip to me or I also have one I can hang around my neck.

That is terrible! I heard they are expensive to replace. I have a glass top & I worry about droping something on it. I will start using my timer more to avoid that same disaster you had. My DH & I both have hand held timers we use them to help us not forget. Add - sewing room just for a minute set timer.
I did burn a hole in countertop, glass pan burned thru hot pad. DH cut out burnt spot & inserted glass cutting boad in counter, what a save.
