I wash them -- as I do all produce anyways. My sis washes everything is water mixed with bleach - she tarted when they were in the Azores and "night soil" was sometimes used as fertilizer in gardens.

When my mother taught school in a back country one room school -- the farm boys were sewed into their union suits for the winter. Can you imagine the smells when the room warmed up -- wood burning pot belly stove

If you don't get apples from a local tree, you really don't know what apples taste like. The Big 3 - red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith - have NO flavor, but that is what most of the country eats, as that is all that is usually sold in supermarkets. Might as well eat a cardboard box IMHO. Just another instance of big agri-business corrupting the food supply.
We have tons of old apple trees here, no one prunes or sprays them, and the apples are great!! We even have one on our road called Banana Sweet, tastes a bit like bananas.
Just made a Nobby Apple Cake, mmmmm....
