Quilt with No Batting???

My grandmother made summer quilts. She used them in place of bedspreads. She used to change the curtains from drapes or heavier weight fabric to something light and airy for summer as well. I loved to go to her house because it made you feel like you were in a warm and cozy place in the winter and airy and free in the summer.

Yes are called summer quilts you often find them in the south

When I picked it up to feel it, it felt as if there was no batting whatsoever in between the layers. Is that possible? Were there ever quilts made with no filler? Or is there batting so incredibly thin you can't tell??
