Annesthreads asked for ideas on how to use/recycle fabric. I'll start out with 2 oldies and 1 new one: using sheets for the backs of quilts, particularly sheets purchased secondhand and recycling blue jeans - torso area with pockets into a purse, legs cut up for rag quilts. New idea: Using a red holiday tablecloth as one side of reversible Christmas placemats. Everything from Goodwill or Salvation Army, etc.

Now please help out with LOTS of other recycling ideas, hints and reminders. Thanks.

I've harvested lots of themed prints from scrub nurse shirts. I can get them for next to nothing and the cotton they use in them is usually the same thread count as quilting fabric. I got one that had gecko fabric and then two days later saw the same fabric posted here being sold for an arm and a leg.

I've been lucky enough to come across a few pareos (wraps) that were cotton and made with beautiful prints. If it's cotton, it's fair game.

Using gently used clothing, sheets and jeans for pot holders and oven mitts. Also, making rag quilts for the shelters and small doggy quilts for the animal shelters.

I have been known to buy items from the thrift store for just the buttons.

as a planet, we have a duty to recycle as there won't be room for everything if we don't. so i'm all for your ideas. :)

I do as lauriejo does and use the buttons. I will use the fabric for something, but if there are buttons, I will save them for something else.

I am in the process of making a quilt out of an appliqued bumper pad found at the goodwill...in perfect condition.
Took apart and used the panels...too much work on there not to have a quilt out of it. I will post pics when done.

Use denim mini skirts to make purses. Add some pockets, embroidery work, quilted divider, straps, etc.

I love to use recycled fabrics. My newest project...taking an old towel, cutting it into squares and adding lace and binding. A new washcloth. Also using towels for batting works great for bathmats, doggie beds and placemats.
