What do you do that's "against the rules"?

When I made my first quilt I just did it. My daughter (the math genius) figured out an Irish chain for me and I quilted it with my machine. I knew nothing of LAQ or FMQ or the feed dog up/down or special feet or puckering backs. I just created my own stencil and quilted it. That quilt is still the best one I have made. As I got more into quilting I "learned the rules" and couldn't get the groove. I now know to go back to the idea of the first quilt and just do it the way that works for me! After about 10 years getting better again!

As a matter of fact we have a gal in our guild that teaches longarm quilting and other quilting by breaking the rules and finding new and better ways to do a quilt. As a matter of fact she is published in magazines and does several classes at national quilt shows.
She keeps telling us as new quilters there are no ugly quilts, blocks, etc.
That gal get high figure dollars for her classes and also for quilting for others but yet she does it her way and probably reason she is so highly wanted as a teacher.
So that is the reason many of us say there are no rules.
