First of all it won't hurt to try; if it's thick enough to stay flat. I've heard on here where others have bought vinyl from the fabric store and made one just putting a small hole where the needle goes. I agree; the idea of the slider is great but the cost sets me back a bit. I'd rather spend the money getting the extra's for my new machine that will help me learn and create better in the future. I'll spluge where I need to and save where I can.

I've used clear vinyl and it worked fine. But what I had was a large single piece of vinyl that covered my entire sewing surface except for the feed dogs.

Then, I bought the slider thinking that adding it would help by covering the area where the feed dogs are (lowered). That wasn't much of an advantage.

I now have my entire sewing table surface covered with white oilcloth and things slide great on it...sometimes too slick for regular sewing!

Bottom line...I'd try oilcloth or vinyl before buying the slider.

an additional thought from another thread was if the vinyl was not slippery enough, put a coat of car was on it....thats what I am going to do.

Here's a good link....Leah Day sells the slider but her explanation and video are a good explanation.

I know someone who uses a silicone spray from the hardware or automotive store....she says it dries fast and makes a nice slick surface that you can renew whenever you need to.

I like the silicone spray, too. I've also thought about using the Reynolds NONSTICK foil - it's really slippery on the nonstick side and I'm thinking you can shape it over the bed of your machine/table. I haven't gotten around to trying it yet, though.

that silicon oven liner (the grey one) from bed bath and beyond works great for me. the small one fits very nicely on my machine. I just put a hole in the center to fit under the needle and tape it on with masking tape and away we go!

I am new to all of this. I think that due to the cost I am going to try Walmart. I figure that if it doesn't work that it hasn't cost me to much.

I would think about anything stiffer than a shower curtain. Oilcloth, vinyl etc.
