I use a frame my husband built for me from a Hinterberg kit. I was, and still am, so excited about not having to baste the quilts, that I just wouldn't hand quilt without it. I have hoop quilted before, but don't enjoy it as much.

I hold great respect for anyone who can quilt without a frame or hoop. And I must admit I am intrigued by the idea....maybe one of these days I will have to give it a try!!!

I quilt without a frame, I just make sure that it is pinned. I also don't use a thimble and only occaisionaly prick myself.

I use a frame. Bought a chair on wheels and just slide from one side to the other. Also, put my needles, threads scissors, etc. on the quilt. Lots of room for these when using a frame.

I always use a frame, 4 boards and clamps at each corner.
Use what works best for you.

I have tried to quilt with a frame. Can't do it. Use my lap and I think it is easier. I guess like everything else personal preference. It's whatever makes it easier for you.

I use a 14-inch hoop, much easier than anything else. Only, NEVER leave it in place for a long period. Always remove when putting it down to keep from leaving hoop marks. Open the outer ring much wider than necessary and gently put in place, then clamp tight. This way there is no shifting of layers. The large hoops are too cumbersome and extend off your knees and collapse from the weight. The smaller hoop is easy to support and handle.

I don't use a frame or hoop. I just use my lap and like BigDog I let it drape over my legs. I also do queen and king quilts and they come out great. For me a hoop or frame are to confining. Just me!

I have never heard of anyone quilting without a frame of some kind, even an embroidery frame. Remember to start in the middle, working out to the sides and when moving the frame, always check the bottom to make sure there are no puckers. Good luck.
